March 13 will mark three years since Buenos Aires archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis.
Francis has repeatedly challenged conservatives within the church during his time as spiritual head of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics. While he hasn't strayed from centuries-old doctrine, he has spent a good deal of his papacy trying to move the church away from the language of culture wars and toward practices that reach out to society's poor and marginalized.
